when the grave becomes a reminder

Another mayyit in the family… another reminder that this life, this temporary dunya, is nothing but a fleeting illusion. Glitter, glam, wealth, fame, and desires, all seem so important until you stand beside a grave. Until you see someone you love lowered into the earth, wrapped in white, silent, and still.

Today, as we lay our beloved to rest, my heart feels heavy and my eyes overflow with tears. There’s a deep ache that words can hardly describe, a mixture of grief and awakening. Standing there, I couldn’t help but realize how fragile life truly is. We walk around as if we own time, as if tomorrow is promised. Yet death reminds us, with every janazah, with every mayyit, that no one is guaranteed another breath.

This dunya deceives us with its beauty. We chase its ornaments and forget that all of it will fade away. Allah ﷻ reminds us in the Qur’an:
“Every soul shall taste death.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:185)
No one escapes it, not the rich, not the poor, not the young, not the old. And when the time comes, no wealth, no status, no power can delay the decree of Allah.

As I watched the soil fall over his grave, I thought, this is where we will all return. No more arguments, no grudges, no pride. Only deeds will accompany us into that dark, silent place. Our hearts break for the loss of our loved ones, yet how often do we forget that one day others will be standing over our graves too?

Dear reader, life is too short to live in anger or bitterness. Mend those broken ties before it’s too late. Apologize even if you weren’t entirely wrong. Forgive even if your heart still aches. Be the one who chooses peace. Be the one who carries goodness, even when surrounded by negativity. For Allah sees all that you endure, every tear you shed, every moment you choose kindness over revenge.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should maintain the bonds of kinship.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6138)
And he ﷺ also said:
“Do not sever relations; do not bear enmity against one another; do not envy one another; and live as fellow brothers as Allah has commanded.” (Sahih Muslim 2563)

Let today be your turning point. Reflect deeply, what are we really chasing? What truly matters when our final destination is a grave?

We have no guarantee of tomorrow. We have no assurance of another chance.
The time in this dunya is melting relentlessly. The mayyit we mourn today is a reminder for us, that our time too will come. So make the change now. Seek Allah sincerely. Love for His sake. Forgive for His sake. And live in such a way that when your time comes, the earth itself will testify that you were among those who remembered Allah often.

From darkness to light, may Allah guide our hearts before they return to Him.
