In today’s digital world, social media has become an everyday part of our lives. We share moments, express ourselves, and connect with others. But as Muslim women, we must ask ourselves—are we using these platforms in a way that pleases Allah Ta’ala? Are we maintaining our modesty, or are we compromising our values for likes, attention and validation.
Modesty (haya) is a central part of our faith. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Indeed, haya (modesty) and iman (faith) are companions. When one of them is lifted, the other is also lifted.”
(Al-Hakim)
This hadith shows us that modesty is not just about what we wear, but also about how we present ourselves in all aspects of life—including online.
Many sisters unknowingly fall into the trap of social media by sharing images of themselves without hijab, posing in ways that attract attention, or interacting with non-mahram men in a casual manner. We look at other’s and want to become modern, becoming completely oblivious of safeguarding our hayaa. These posts may seem harmless at first, but they have lasting consequences.
We often forget that whatever we upload stays online forever. Even after we pass away, our pictures and videos will still be there for people to see. Imagine standing before Allah Ta’ala on the Day of Judgment, knowing that your pictures were still being viewed by non-mahrams. Would that be something we are proud of?
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
(Muslim)
What we leave behind should be good deeds, not images and interactions that contradict the teachings of Islam.
Social media thrives on validation. It’s easy to get caught up in seeking likes and compliments. But as Muslim women, we should remind ourselves: Who are we trying to please—creation or Allah Ta’ala?
Allah warns us in the Quran:
“And do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance.”
(Quran 33:33)
If our online presence is leading us away from Allah Ta’ala, we need to take a step back and reassess our intentions.
- Post with Purpose: Share beneficial knowledge, Islamic reminders, or things that inspire goodness.
- Be Mindful of Pictures: If a picture does not align with Islamic modesty, reconsider posting it.
- Limit Interaction with Non-Mahrams: Guard your online conversations and avoid unnecessary interactions.
- Make Dua for Guidance: Ask Allah Ta’ala to help you use social media in a way that pleases Him.
Sisters, this dunya (world) is temporary, but the Hereafter is eternal. Every second, every minute, every hour of the life of this world is like a block of ice that is melting relentlessly. Let’s strive to use social media in a way that benefits us in both worlds. Let our online presence be one that earns us rewards, not regrets.
May Allah Ta’ala guide us all to use our voices, our platforms, and our lives in a way that pleases Him. Ameen
