Take care of yourself Take care of yourself firstly before taking care of others. Hear me out- I’m not saying go on a shopping spree and put yourself heavily in debt or take your nephew’s lunch money (he’ll probably give it to you if you asked).
I’m saying don’t take care of others to the extent that you forget yourself.
Allah has given us the free will to choose, to make our own choices, and the prophet Salallahu alayhi Wa salaam said we should place our trust in Allah but tie our camel. Should we live with the expectation that insaan (mankind) will take care of us? Or should we place our trust in Allah and do that which makes us feel alive (providing that it’s halal)?
I get it. life’s hard- our lives, studies, and our families can be quite chaotic but that doesn’t mean we should neglect ourselves.Consider this, Allah has given you families, children and all these beautiful things. Those things are an amanah- a trust. Allah Ta’ ala has given some of us these things as a test, trial and it’s simply ones of the blessings of Ar-Razaq.
But did you know that the body He has given you, the spirituality He has bestowed upon you, it’s also an amanah. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says He has created you in the best possible posture (95:4). Would it not be an act of gratitude towards Him to take care of yourself? To be kind to yourself?
Forgive yourself for something you’ve done a million years ago. It’s beautiful, yet heart-breaking how Allah, The Most merciful, can forgive us for something we did a million years ago, but we can’t forgive ourselves for the smallest things, for what we did in a time of ignorance.
Gaze at your reflection in the mirror, and recognise who gave you those beautiful attributes, who moulded you to be that way- Allah. Say “Ma sha Allah”, for you were created as Allah wishes it to be, then supplicate to Allah and say “Oh Allah, You have granted me beautiful external features, grant me beautiful internal features.”
Do not depend on another to make you feel beautiful and whole because, no one will feel that hole in your heart and life but Allah. Allah has blessed us with reminders in the form of people; people whom we love dearly, but they are not the air we breathe, they are not forever (at least not in the dunya, by Allah’s will), they are not Al-‘Awwal and Al-‘Akhir (The first, The Beginning-less and The Last, The Endless)- Allah is.
Continue to take care of your deen following the Qur’an and sunnah for the sake of Allah and in sha Allah, taking care of yourself in every way will become easier, like second nature.
Take care of your soul, your body, your heart and tongue. Hadith
